Thuk Thay is a card game for up to 2 to 6 players. Played with a single deck of 52 cards, each player is dealt 6 cards to play the game. The player who starts round 1 is automatically that round’s leader. This person will choose to play any card from their hand to start the game. Each player will then take turns going clockwise, attempting to trump the suit that was played before them. If a player cannot trump the card that is in play for that round with a higher value card of the same suit, they must choose a card from their hand to fold and wait for the next round to begin. If no player can trump the leading card and everyone has folded for that round, that player who led, begins the next round and they have free choice to play any card they want from their hand.
The game consists of 5 rounds. In order to compete in the final round, a player would need to win at least 1 of the 4 previous rounds. To win a round, a player must have the higher ranking card of the suit that was played at the beginning of the round.
At the final round, active players will have 2 cards remaining. Players who did not win a round are ineligible and cannot participate in this round. The leader of the final round will then present 1 card of their choice. If no other players can trump this card, all other players must attempt to beat the leader’s 6th card. In the event that another player can trump the leader’s 5th card, that player now becomes the leader and all other players will need to beat the new leader’s 6th card.
An Example of the game follows
Player 1 plays an 8 of Hearts; Player 2 then has the option to play a higher suit or fold, if they want to strategically save it for a later round. Whichever participant plays the highest suit becomes the leader and can begin the next round with any card they choose.
